The Positioning and Networks division develops wireless communication, positioning and identification technologies for empathetic connected digital applications in industrial markets and other industries. Our core competencies lie in positioning (with 5G, 6G, WiFi, UWB or the use of features of future mobile networks such as CSI, channel charting, beamforming), low power IoT networks and AI-based data analysis. Leveraging massive MIMO technology, smart reflective surfaces, joint communication and sensing technologies, as well as edge computing and AI are also used for energy efficiency management depending on system requirements. Our research, design and development focus on issues such as optimizing energy and resource efficiency while at the same time at least maintaining operational performance for the business case.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, headquartered in Erlangen, Germany, conducts world-class research on microelectronic and IT system solutions and services. Today, it is the largest institute of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Research at Fraunhofer IIS revolves around two guiding topics: Audio and Media Technologies and Cognitive Sensor Technologies.
In the context of Cognitive Sensor Technologies, the institute researches technologies for sensor technology, data transmission technology, data analysis methods and the exploitation of data as part of data- driven services and their accompanying business models. This adds a cognitive component to the function of the conventional “smart” sensor. The results of this research have been applied in the areas of connected mobility, communication and application solutions for the Internet of Things, digitalization of human sensing, product and material monitoring, and business analytics in supply chains.
